Rethink plastic

Reduce. Reuse. Refill.

Galadari Advocates & Legal Consultant supports the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai in their Dubai Can initiative to reduce the single-use of plastic.

Launched on January 16th 2022, the Dubai Can initiative promotes the reduction of single-use plastics (i.e. plastic water bottles). The campaign includes the installation of public water fountains throughout the city, encouraging the population of Dubai and visitors to use refillable water bottles over purchasing single-use plastic bottles.

Dubai Can is a sustainability campaign by DET and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai. It supports the vision of sustainable growth in Dubai and minimises the global environmental impact by reducing single-use plastic pollution. Dubai Can aim at inspiring and shifting the lifestyle norms of all Dubai residents and visitors.

This campaign is a key initiative in reducing the UAE’s plastic pollution footprint. Every day around the world we use 20 million plastic water bottles, many of which end up being dumped into our ocean. According to figures published at the World Government Summit in February 2019, 11 billion plastic bags are used annually in the UAE, which is the equivalent of 1,184 plastic bags per person per year compared to a global average of 307 plastic bags per person per year.

Galadari has been advising on legal aspects of the Dubai Can initiative for over 18 months. Today, we are pleased to see the launch of the campaign and support it by distributing all Galadari employees a personalised bottle that can be refilled with water at one of the office’s water fountains, or with their preferred drink! Educational guides for employees and their families, as well as recycling solutions, have been distributed across our offices. We are aiming at reducing the use of single-use plastic bottles also including plastic cups and other disposable recipients in our offices as well as outside.

Senior Partner Abdulla Galadari commented on the launch of the campaign:
